What is a narcissistic personality?

Among the 10 described pathological personalities by the Manual of mental disorders U.S., the DSM4, narcissistic personality is one of the best known of all. Indeed, the famous myth of Narcissus who fell in love with himself admiring his own image in water, illustrates this personality. The narcissistic personality
Martin is narcissistic, as a pathological, not easy. It never does to others, but brings everything to him. We need the conversation focuses on him, on his exploits, otherwise it is not interested. Indeed, it seems implausible, if present, we can focus on something other than the person. Everything he does is brilliant, exceptional and must be admired. This may seem ridiculous and pathetic to brag as much and believe that the world revolves around you. However, no pity for Martin because he has no empathy, no kindness to anyone … unless it can be useful. He is interested and able to manipulate to achieve its ends and find it quite normal, it does not even cache.
His wife, initial greatly admired. If he courted because it is beautiful and smart … and it is right to make such a wife. Its qualities it does not interest him, but the idea that the other is a man who married a woman. It may do more than selfishness of his spouse and separates him. She complains a moment, thinking that his attitude showed a terrible lack of confidence in him, but she realizes that it is a kind of distorted vision of the world: ‘I am at the center of the world and everything must turn around me. If his wife away, Martin believes the jealous because it succeeds best it professionally, as he imagines that his fellow workers the envy (which is not the case!). It does not recover in question. Indeed, professionally, it has not always so successful because it can be blinded by illusions. It feels better than the other, unique, and has already been dismissed for having exceeded its powers and triggered disaster ….

Martin is narcissistic and it is not easy for those who meet. It does not really friends, just knowledge that are not very long because people do not go to friendly relationship with him and move quickly.
The objective characteristics of a narcissistic personality are as follows (based on DSM4)
Note that it is usually a man, this personality disorder is less common among women:

- He has a very high importance on its own. It tends to overestimate its powers, its achievements. He thought to be recognized as superior even without having proof.
- It fantasize about ideas of unlimited success, power, beauty or ideal love …
- The single judge, special and believes he can not be understood by people like him, special and high level.
- It has an excessive need to be admired.
- He believes that it is due. Believing someone special, he found that he has a particularly favorable and desires should be automatically met.
- It has a utility of others. It operates, uses them to achieve their purposes.
- The lack of empathy. It does not, does not recognize the feelings or needs of others.
- It is envious towards others and believes that others envy.
- It is arrogant and haughty.

We talk about pathological narcissistic personality only if there is at least 5 characters traits precedents and they are continuously since the beginning of adulthood. It is thus a function of very psychically rooted in personality (so different from a narcissistic tendency).

Why can we have a narcissistic personality?
It is difficult to answer, even if assumptions were made. Maybe too admiring parents towards their child will give the impression that it is normal to be admired and be the center of the world, an attitude which he fails to get rid thereafter. It could also be a kind of defense mechanism to protect themselves, to hide its faults, ie to put themselves forward, boast, to hide that, basically, no feels not so admirable than that.
These personalities are struggling to evolve, because they must go through an acceptance of their fragility, which is very difficult and painful. The first best to help them evolve is perhaps rather to try to make them aware of the emotional needs of others, which does not put them directly in danger.
